Making money over a cup of coffee: how strategic consulting turned a café from standstill into the talk of the town
A case study from SN Advisory shows how a newly opened café doubled its revenue and became a fixture in town through strategic marketing, clear branding and simple sales optimisation.

A case study from SN Advisory’s work
Business consulting is often associated with conference rooms, presentations and abstract strategies. In reality, however, the best decisions are often made not at a desk but where businesses actually live: in day-to-day operations, in direct contact with customers, on the shop floor.
This article describes an SN Advisory project where that was exactly the case. A newly opened café that was barely making ends meet was strategically realigned, step by step. Not through complicated measures or high upfront investment, but through clear positioning, clean marketing, simple sales logic and a deep understanding of customer behaviour.
The result was not a short-term effect but sustainable growth. Revenue doubled, the café became a fixture in town and evolved from an unclear concept into a strong, recognisable brand.
The starting point: a good café without a clear profile
When SN Advisory joined the project, the café had only just opened, with plenty of commitment but little financial stability. The business was operating close to break-even, at times even below it. There were guests, but no clear direction, no recognition value and no strategic leadership.
The biggest problem was not the quality of the products but the lack of positioning. The café offered coffee, cakes, baked goods, grilled food, burgers, breakfast options and classic bakery products all at once. To outsiders, it was impossible to tell what this café actually stood for.
In practice, this left customers uncertain. If you offer everything, you rarely stick in people’s minds. This is exactly where the consulting came in.
Why visibility comes before revenue
Before there could be any talk of increasing revenue, another question had to be answered: why should anyone come here in particular?
At the outset, marketing and branding were almost non-existent. There was no clear social media presence, no consistent external image and a Google Business Profile that wasn’t actively used. For a local café, however, this is crucial, as purchasing decisions are often made spontaneously and depend on location.
SN Advisory therefore began by laying the foundations. Social media channels were built up strategically, relevant hashtags defined and content specifically geared towards visibility in the region. At the same time, the Google profile was optimised to appear in local searches and build trust.
Only through these measures did the café become noticeable in the town at all.
Why simple ideas often have the biggest impact
A central part of the consulting was simplifying day-to-day sales and making them more emotionally appealing for customers. This wasn’t about complicated systems, but about incentives that were easy to understand.
One of the most effective measures was the introduction of two separate stamp cards: one for hot drinks such as coffee and tea, and another for grilled dishes and burgers. Customers received a stamp with every purchase and got every tenth item free.
This simple mechanism had an enormous effect. Guests came back specifically to fill their cards. Some visitors developed real routines to reach their free reward faster. Spontaneous purchases turned into habits.
Set menus instead of decision stress
Another lever was the design of the offering. Previously, customers had to choose every component individually. This slowed down the sales process and often caused hesitation at the counter.
Together with the café, SN Advisory developed clear menu structures. Breakfast menus, lunch deals and seasonal bundles were created. Customers could now make simple decisions without having to think for long. Attractive price advantages made the menus even more appealing.
This simplification not only increased the average basket size but also sped up operations.
Seasonal ideas and emotional brand loyalty
As its visibility grew, the café began to roll out creative seasonal ideas that were promoted specifically via social media. Some of these concepts became real crowd-pullers and attracted a great deal of attention in the region.
Not all of the ideas are described in detail in this article. Some of them are documented in SN Advisory’s portfolio. As a small insight, though, it is worth mentioning that unusual product presentations, such as an espresso served in a ball of ice, went viral and made the café known well beyond the town.
These measures strengthened not only revenue but also the emotional connection to the brand.
From café to a fixture in town
As demand grew, the café’s role changed too. Customers no longer came just for a quick coffee but increasingly used the business for larger orders. Packages were created for parties, birthdays, weddings and corporate events.
The menu structure made it easy for customers to place complete orders without having to plan every detail individually. This created an additional revenue stream that hadn’t existed before.
At the same time, the café’s presence on platforms such as TikTok grew. Several videos reached a wide audience, with hundreds of thousands of views. The café became visible, modern and relevant.
Investments that reflect growth
The financial growth eventually enabled the café to undertake a complete renovation. The interior was fully modernised, the branding consistently applied and the technical equipment expanded. Digital displays replaced traditional menus, automatic doors improved comfort and the entire look was reimagined for today.
These investments were not a risk but a logical consequence of steady development. The café transformed from a traditional business into a modern meeting place with a clear identity.
Financial optimisation as a silent growth driver
An often overlooked part of the consulting was financial optimisation. Targeted analysis made it possible to cut running costs and reallocate budgets. These savings allowed the café to invest in marketing early on without putting its liquidity at risk.
Especially in the early phase, this step was crucial to making growth possible at all.
Why consulting sometimes starts over coffee
This project is a powerful demonstration that successful business consulting doesn’t always have to be complex. Often it is enough to look closely, listen and ask the right questions. Many decisions were made right there on site, in conversations in the café, in the middle of day-to-day business.
That is exactly where the solutions that last are found.
